Afenifere does not believe in secession – Adebanjo

Pan-Yoruba socio-political group Afenifere said Thursday that it does not believe in Nigeria’s secession and disintegration, but demands true federalism to address the country’s challenges. This was stated by Ayo Adebanjo, leader of the organization, in Lagos while speaking with journalists. He said: “We are not anarchists; we are not secessionists. We recognize that there is a democratically elected government. “However, Afenifere’s considered position is that the president urgently constitutes a Government of National Unity solely to undertake the restructuring of Nigeria, in consultation with the Nigerian people. “The issue of restructuring has to do with our freedom. We are Democrats. I don’t want violence. I don’t want the country to break up. “ Adebanjo also called for a sovereign national conference on restructuring, adding that the country must return to the 1960 Constitution of Independence before the 2023 general elections. He said: “The Nigeria that was agreed upon was, by design, based on a parliamentary system of government. “The Nigeria that was agreed upon was one that recognized the rights of federated regions to nationality within the scope of the federation that was born. “We remain convinced that the need for a sovereign national conference is imperative. The basis of the Nigerian state must be clearly negotiated
